Finding your "Happy Place"

So it's been two years since I've been to my "Happy Place".  Now don't get me wrong it's not that I'm an unhappy guy.  I have a good life and a great family.  There are many things that make me happy.  Anything from a giggle to a hug from any of my five granddaughters makes me happy.  A cruise in my 66 with the top down and the deep rumble coming from the side-pipes makes me happy.  Sitting on the porch and hearing nothing but the call of a mourning dove in the morning or a bull frog breaking the evening quiet these all make me happy.

However; when it comes to going to my "Happy Place" there really only one place that does it for me and that place is Captiva/Sanibel.  It's been two years since we've been here so this trip will be like catching up with an old friend.

 For those of you that know what it's like to find your "Happy Place" congratulations.  For those of you who don't the best way I can describe it is like the feeling you get when you take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Feels good don't it!

 This year its just Carol, me, and the two oldest granddaughters.  When they are down here they are affectionately known as the "Beach Angels". Lexi has been coming to paradise with us since 2004.  Hard to believe next year she will be a freshman in high school.  Wow!

 I know she will probably soon out grow going on trips with NaNa and PaPa but I have no doubt she will never grow tired of this place.

 This trip will be a little different we usually rent a house on Captiva but this year we're trying a condo on Sanibel.  Sand Pointe is a 45 unit complex off of West Gulf Drive.  We are beach front so with a front row seat to the gulf and the constant breeze from the ocean I'm sure i feel a good stretch of lazy coming on.

 Last time we were down here Taylor our other Beach Angel found a rare shell for down here, an Imperial Venus.  Can't wait to go exploring with her and seeing what she comes up with this year.

 First order of business once we're at the condo is make sure there are no loose floor mats laying around!  We don't want any sprained ankles or trips to urgent care this year.  We will have to go to CVS though because last time we were down Carol twisted her ankle on the floor mat at the front door where we were staying.  Because her foot swelled up so much she got a pair of flip flops at CVS.  She loves those flip flops so much she has to go back for another pair!  Flip Flops yes, Sprained ankles NO!

 We arrived on Saturday afternoon.  The trip most of the way down was clear, but as we got closer to paradise the skies darken and we we're in for a rainy afternoon in southwest Florida.  I did learn a new breakfast combination this year.  On Saturday morning when we leave Valdosta GA its usually a mad dash to paradise so we don't stop for breakfast.  Taylor's breakfast of champions on Saturday morning is powdered donuts, SlimJims and Chocolate milk. Yum!

After the floor mat check we're off for a quick trip for groceries and dinner at Doc Fords. Then a visit with an old friend as we check out the beach for the first time this trip. The skies were cloudy so no beautiful sunset this evening.  The sunsets this year will not be as spectacular as we are use to when we stay on Captiva.  Where we are staying on Sanibel this year the island faces pretty much South.  Captiva has more of a Western exposure.  The water was cool and we leave the beach as the daylight dwindles with hopes for a better day on Sunday.  Apparently last week was pretty much a rain event so were praying to the beach gods that this week will improve and provide us with some much desired vitamin D.

Hey RC, sorry I'm late....I have been having computer issues and just today saw your post on my blog!! I'm here now, and will find a way to stay with you while you are there! Hopefully my ipad will let me see your posts, if I can't get the laptop fixed!! So glad you are back and I so look forward to your posts! I have missed them!!

I'm so happy CHeri let me know you're back on Sanibel and posting. I haven't been there in 2 years myself and my daughter and I were just talking about how much we miss it.

It's been a rough week this week.  While I generally keep my blog on the lighter side.  My words come from my head, but my desire to write comes from my heart.  My heart this week has felt both pain and Joy some of which I'll share with you today. Some Beach

Posting a little later today sitting out on the lania listening to the thunder roll and having a glass of Liquid Lubrication. Strawberry/Plum wine 2008.  (It was a very good year).   As you regulars on the forum know I enjoy making homemade wine.  This one was actually made by a friend of mine.  His name is Gil.  He's the one that introduced me to the art of winemaking.  Strawberry Plum 2008   Gil is best described as one of those country boys that can survive. He's does it all from making his own deer sausage to turning various fruits into liquid lubrication he makes some good stuff!  The first time I saw him making deer sausage I was a bit perplexed he was using the camper on the back of his old Ford pickup as a smoker.  I thought the darn truck was on fire when I first saw it.  Some of the best deer sausage I ever ate. A Special Shell

Yesterday evening we had one on the lowest tide we were able to catch this week.   I walked the surf at the shoreline to see if there were any shells. I was able to find a few but the shells have not been plentiful this week.  We actually collected more at Barefoot Beach the other day than we have here all week. As I was walking along I began remembering some of the times on the beach with the Beach Angels.  The younger one "Taylor" taught me a life's lesson that I would like to share with you. Taylor especially when she was smaller was always amazed with collecting rocks.  It was nothing to dump out a pocketful of rocks that she had collected from around PaPa's Koi pond or in NaNa's garden.  They were nothing special they were just rocks. Naturally when we began bringing Taylor to Captiva where the beach is full of shells as far as the eye can see. She did what most of us do down here she began collecting shells. Superman & Tweety Bird

Thursday morning it was time for more seafood omelet research.  We went to the Island Cow and I got a what?  answer: Seafood Omelet.  Just seeing if you've been paying attention.  The cow's omlete did have a pretty good amount of seafood but the crab meat was only shreds and there was more shrimp than anything.  There was also a watery consistency to the inside of the omelet that was most likely from not suffciently draining the seafood before adding it to the omlete. So ranking order so far IMO is: 1.  Hungry fisherman @  Lighthouse Cafe 2.  Crab & asparagus omelet @ Amy's Over Easy 3.  Loaded Seafood Omelet @ Island Cow On Thursday the high rollers came to Captiva.  I'm not referring to a group from vegas with money to burn, but mother nature rockin the waves in the gulf.  You know it's rough when you look down the beach as far as the eye can see and there is not more than a hand full of people in the water. Merica Road Trippin! Chapter 2 "On The Road Again"

 I'm a little delayed in releasing the second chapter for the Road Trippin blog.  Remember that storm I told you about that happened on July 1st when we left on our trip?  Well, apparently mother nature thought since we wern't here to enjoy her fury, she would pay us another visit on the 12th.  More trees down and power knocked out again!   So I have been spending some time doing cleanup and getting the tree off my shed!  This storm took out some huge older growth trees.  Ripped them out right at the base of the tree.  Good thing is we are all safe.  The cleanup is not done but thought I would come in and cool off.  I'm missing those cooler temperatures we were experiencing in Montana and South Dakota. Mother nature is not happy! Base of the tree that hit the shed!    Thankfully, this old oak was leaning on about a 30-degree angle away from the shed.  The limbs that did make contact on the shed only did minimal damage.  The tree would have done some serious damage had it be

Soccer PaPa

At the end of February, my life has changed.  No more 9 to 5 for me, every day is a vacation as retirement has officially kicked in!  My blog has been mainly devoted to our experiences on some small islands in southwest Florida, Sanibel and Captiva Island. While I hope to still visit and share more experiences from this magical place, I will be sharing other trips and experiences as we continue to navigate along Life's Highway.   Before, it seemed like I only wrote about the annual trip to that special place. Branson by the Ocean a.k.a. Gulf Shores Alabama

So today reality sets in and its back to the daily grind.  I still haven't told you about our last day at Gulf Shores, Alabama so here goes. We left St. George Island around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.  Next stop, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Alabama. We drove along the coast most of the way.  Lots of swamp logging going on in this area and somewhat unfortunate to see so many closed businesses and abandoned buildings scattered along the coast line. It was a different story when we got into Orange Beach/Gulf Shores.  I compare it to a place we have in the southern part of Missouri called Branson.  Lots of people, lots of cars, and a bunch of tourist type attractions.  So to me Gulf Shores was Branson by the Ocean. It has a higher density of people and high rise accommodations than my heart desires but we have never been here and now we know.      The slogan for Gulf shores is "Small Town, Big Beach"  The beach was wide and where we stopped there was probably 3-

The Sequel-Day 3

Happy 7/11/11. Hope your lucky today.  I know I am after all I'm here.  Have I told you lately how much I love this place?  Probably not I'm not the mushy type but I do!  Today the Director and The exec. producer got out for breakfast while the rest of the cast spent time at home base doing some pre-soaking in the pool before we logged in another day at the beach. My favorite breakfast on the Island has to be the Hungry Fisherman at the Lighthouse Cafe.  After breakfast a quick stop By Tropical wines but they were not open yet and the Director was getting itchy to get back to the beach.  I've been waiting over a year now to try their Watermelon wine and I'm gonna get some this year.  Just hope I don't have to break the window out of the place or pick the lock to do it.  JK! (seems like they're always closed when I stop by. Exploration beyond the beach

So the theme this year is about new experiences and first for us while here on Captiva/Sanibel. Our house this year sits on the water up the channel from Blind Pass.  This is a first for us usually we are trying to get closer to the gulf but the island is narrow down by Blind Pass and it is a pretty short walk to the beach. The house is not much more than 30 foot off the water and has a dock which has led to many new discoveries for the Beach Angels.  I put together a Scavenger Hunt for the Angels this year.  They are getting older and I wanted to open their eyes to the wonderful world of nature that surrounds this island. The Scavenger hunt has about forty items.  They either need to collect or spot the items while here this week.  Lexi  and I spent quality time this evening sitting on the dock and watching nature in all its splendor.  From Rainbows, Osprey eating a fish and a alligator we got a little of everything tonight.  Best part was just sitting there sharing the time together.

Merica Road Trippin Chapter 4 Heaven's Peak

This trip only came about because of a suggestion from my co-pilot.  While Yellowstone was mentioned in our initial conversation, I didn't want to fight July crowds in Yellowstone.  We plotted out this path instead.  I'm so glad that we did, Glacier National Park is an amazing place.  This was technically just a road trip, we were basically just passing through the area while making our way back home from Oregon.  Our path exploring this area would take us along the Going-To-The-Sun Road.  It's a 52-mile route that takes you West to East through the park. I would consider going back sometime.  The raw, undeveloped beauty of this area, leaves one without words to describe the impression it has left in my memory.  Coming from a guy who has spent most of his vacations at the beach, you know I was impressed.
