Some of today's "BS"

 Today we started our day with some "BS".  

Breakfast & Strawberry Preserves

Our usual opening parlay into a week of eating out and consuming adult beverages. No better place to start than the Lighthouse Cafe. The crowds seem a little lighter this year.  Not sure why but I know people are dealing with a lot of "BS".  Hopefully my "BS" this week will make you smile.

Waitress comes to the table "Hi you all ready to order."  Me: "You kidding I been waiting a year for this" I could go on and on about my breakfast choice but you've heard that before.  Today we'll focus on something else that the Lighthouse does really well.  They make their own strawberry preserves and serve it in a little container.  Take that hot buttered toast and dip it in there.  OMG it's pure heaven. We can't leave Sanibel without taking a few of jars home every year.  It's kinda become a tradition.

So back from breakfast its time for some more "BS".

Broken Boogie Boards & Strong Surf

Today mother nature was letting it rip in the gulf.   NaNa and the youngest Beach Angel were contemplating getting in but decided pretty quickly that it wasn't going to happen today.  Me on the other hand it was more like a hold my beer moment.

I grabbed a boogie board and headed for the gulf.  I should have known better.  I have BBSBS and rough water will usually cause it to flair up.  I charged into the first few crashing waves that were close to shore thinking if I could just get a little further out everything would be ok.  Phew! I made it.  I looked in at NaNa and the youngest Beach Angel and saw the look of terror on our Beach Angels face.  I looked back towards the gulf and it was coming the biggest wave of the day!  Split second decision time here folks.  Dive under the water or try to get up and ride this sucker in.  One second later, Wrong Decision Boogie board breaks and mother nature is beating me like a rag doll.  Of course now the BBSBS kicks in.  Im almost back to shore before I can  get to my feet and when I do we almost had a full moon on Captiva today in the middle of the day.   I stayed out of the gulf the rest of the day.

By the way I forgot to tell you more about "BBSBS" in case you were wondering.  I haven't been clinically diagnosed but it is a common problem that many men face especially as we get older.  It is controllable with proper diet and exercise.  BBSBS = BIG BELLY SMALL BUTT SYNDROME  a major side effect is losing your swim trunks and now you know. 

P.S. NaNa says trying to get a hot shower with two teenage Beach Angels in the same house is total BS!

Finding your "Happy Place"

Welcome to Marathon

The adventure continues as we head further south, down to the keys.  Home base this week will be Marathon.  On Monday, we have a trip planned to Dry Tortuga National Park.  That is pretty much the only thing that has a time commitment to it.  We're just going to let the week play out and see what each day brings us. We drove through Fort Myers Beach on our way to an overnight stop in Bonita Springs.  I think due to the higher concentration of houses and businesses on FMB the devastation was extreme.  We stayed in a house on the south end FMB back in 2019.  Below is a picture of that house taken in March of this year.  Bottom floor blown out, and what you don't see in this picture is the whole back of the house is gone. Soccer PaPa

At the end of February, my life has changed.  No more 9 to 5 for me, every day is a vacation as retirement has officially kicked in!  My blog has been mainly devoted to our experiences on some small islands in southwest Florida, Sanibel and Captiva Island. While I hope to still visit and share more experiences from this magical place, I will be sharing other trips and experiences as we continue to navigate along Life's Highway.   Before, it seemed like I only wrote about the annual trip to that special place. So I have been a little behind in posting to the blog this year.  The time is flying by way too fast.  Wednesday's plan was a day at the beach.  I started off by getting a few shots of the sunrise from the dock.  Nothing like watching the world wake up in paradise.  I was then off to Baileys for some Doughsants.  This was another first for us.  We never heard of a doughsant before but thought what the heck lets give them a try.  I kind of envisioned the light airy texture of a croissant mixed with the glazed goodness of a doughnut. The folks at Baileys are so polite.  The lady at the Bakery counter told me this batch came out smaller than normal so they gave me double the amount for the same price! Ticket to paradise

$6 for a ticket to paradise.  I'll take it. Sanibel Causeway Price for admission $6 We're here!  Great trip down we actually arrived earlier than we normally would and we even made a stop in Sarasota to pick up a new water camera.  On day one we stopped in Valdosta Ga.  We got a text from our daughter she was surprised we made it there as quickly as we did then she politely ask us to let her out of the trunk!  I know she really wanted to come but a new job this year meant no trip for her and the Beach Angels.  I'm sure we will torture her all week long with text and pictures. We'll  put this new camera through the paces this week and hope that it holds up better than the Fujifilm one  did. It bit the dust while we were vacationing down here a couple years ago.  I really wanted to get a Panasonic Lumix T5 but it was impossible to find it without ordering it on-line and we waited too long and didn't think we could get it delivered in the mail before we left.

Manatee Alert!!!!!

On Tuesday we got out to the beach early.  The water was calm and clear.  So we hit the water right away and I brought the mask and snorkel with me to have a look around.  I could see the bottom in 4 to 5 foot of water.  I love to use the snorkel and float around its like your in your own little world.  It's just you and the ocean. You do have to occasionally look up to see where you are.  When I looked up on one occasion I saw two women standing on the shore looking out towards me.  The wife was in the water closer to shore and seemed to be having a conversation with them. I didn't really give it much thought at the time.  It seems like most people you meet down her are all super nice and I figured they were just saying "Hi" and talking about how calm the water was. So then they walked away and I drifted up to my wife.  She was laughing and saying something about Manatee alert!! Apparently the two ladies were on their porch when they spotted what they thought

Butt Cheek Beach

We are staying on Grassy Key, it's one of 13 islands that make up Marathon.  The house is right on the water on the Gulf side.   The view from our house  The water in this area is relatively shallow, and the pier on the right is part of the property.  Looking forward to some stunning sunsets.  I hope to see plenty of wildlife as the waters here are very clear, and it's easy to see the bottom.                                                                                 The house on Marathon The street we are located on is very quiet and the houses next to us are vacant. It makes it feel like our own little personal paradise. After getting things unloaded, we go out to check out the pier and about halfway down the pier, we get our first glimpse of wildlife. Exploration beyond the beach

So the theme this year is about new experiences and first for us while here on Captiva/Sanibel. Our house this year sits on the water up the channel from Blind Pass.  This is a first for us usually we are trying to get closer to the gulf but the island is narrow down by Blind Pass and it is a pretty short walk to the beach. The house is not much more than 30 foot off the water and has a dock which has led to many new discoveries for the Beach Angels.  I put together a Scavenger Hunt for the Angels this year.  They are getting older and I wanted to open their eyes to the wonderful world of nature that surrounds this island. The Scavenger hunt has about forty items.  They either need to collect or spot the items while here this week.  Lexi  and I spent quality time this evening sitting on the dock and watching nature in all its splendor.  From Rainbows, Osprey eating a fish and a alligator we got a little of everything tonight.  Best part was just sitting there sharing the time together.

In the Blink of an Eye

It's been a rough week this week.  While I generally keep my blog on the lighter side.  My words come from my head, but my desire to write comes from my heart.  My heart this week has felt both pain and Joy some of which I'll share with you today. On Monday Nov. 20th I'm on the mends from a rough couple of days on what looks like could be a precursory strike from a future Kidney Stone.  Spent a couple of days on pain meds, telling myself I'm not going to the ER.  Carol's been battling the crud and been coughing a lot for the past week.  We get a visit from Kristine, our daughter (technically Daughter-in law) but we adopted here years ago when she moved down here from Oregon to carve out a life with our son Ryan.  In her selfless manner, she's here to deliver a spare nebulizer to her Missouri mom, who's been fighting the crud.  Why? Because that's just who she is. She didn't visit for long, and we shared a few passing comments about her not wanting to

Boogie Board Beach Angels

So Sunday started off with overcast skies, a quick thank-you to the man upstairs for giving us such a beautiful place to be, and breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe.  Best seafood omelette on Sanibel hands down. When we got back we were in "Beach Mode".  Not Marshawn Lynch "Beast Mode" but Carol lets getting moving, time to go to the Beach Mode.  Since the skies were still overcast we weren't  in full Beach Mode which means we didn't take all the usual stuff.  For those of you that have been with us you know how much of the usual stuff we take! I would have to rate this as one of the best Beach Days for the Beach Angels that I can remember.  Our spot on the beach has a nice sandbar running  just out from the shore line and it made for Boogie Board heaven for the girls today.
