Our trip provided us with lots of wildlife.  The water out our backdoor was so clear, it was easy to see the bottom.  We also saw fish and coral at Dry Tortuga National Park, but unfortunately it was too difficult for me to get good pictures with my iPhone in a waterproof case.

SH**t Doesn't Always Roll Downhill

So I really didn't think I would write much in the blog during this trip.  Normally, the Beach Angels and other guests supply the comic relief while they are here, and while Rachelle and Beach Angel "Skylar" are here for a few days, it has been realtively quiet, and we have just been chillin. You know, during my working career, I spent time as a line worker,  A mechanic, a Supervisor, a  Middle Manager, and a Packaging Engineer. I was also a Director f or Lean Manufacturing.  During those years, I learned a lot about how the progression of things worked. We were always aware of the fact that SH**t rolls down hill and you had to always be ready to adapt and overcome the adversities of said Sh**t that were sometimes made by upper-level management that really had no idea what was happening on the shop floor. 50 years of Living the Dream

It was a warm and sunny day when Joe and I jumped into his Dad's car.  We weren't going far, just a couple of miles down the road.  The car was a beauty. It was white with a Black vinyl top.  Back in those days, the Mopars were as long as a limo and had plenty of horsepower.  This was the perfect car for the day. But on this day, our limo had other plans.  We pulled onto Telegraph Road and got as far as the 270 overpass when the Plymouth died. There we were, two guys in tuxedos on the overpass with our thumbs out, sweating and beating feet to our destination two miles down the road. She was already there. Back then, we didn't have cell phones.  There were pay phones, but the closest one was probably more than a mile away.  With less than one hour to go.  What would happen if I didn’t show up on time?  Would she think I changed my mind?  Would this be the end of what was supposed to be the beginning? Some Beach

Posting a little later today sitting out on the lania listening to the thunder roll and having a glass of Liquid Lubrication. Strawberry/Plum wine 2008.  (It was a very good year).   As you regulars on the forum know I enjoy making homemade wine.  This one was actually made by a friend of mine.  His name is Gil.  He's the one that introduced me to the art of winemaking.  Strawberry Plum 2008   Gil is best described as one of those country boys that can survive. He's does it all from making his own deer sausage to turning various fruits into liquid lubrication he makes some good stuff!  The first time I saw him making deer sausage I was a bit perplexed he was using the camper on the back of his old Ford pickup as a smoker.  I thought the darn truck was on fire when I first saw it.  Some of the best deer sausage I ever ate. Soccer PaPa

At the end of February, my life has changed.  No more 9 to 5 for me, every day is a vacation as retirement has officially kicked in!  My blog has been mainly devoted to our experiences on some small islands in southwest Florida, Sanibel and Captiva Island. While I hope to still visit and share more experiences from this magical place, I will be sharing other trips and experiences as we continue to navigate along Life's Highway.   Before, it seemed like I only wrote about the annual trip to that special place. Shin-Zen-Bi

The Bonsai represents the three virtues or Shin-Zen-Bi, which translate into truth, goodness and beauty. Saturday was our last day on the island.  We ventured out on another field trip.  This time to North Fort Myers area to check out Wigert's Bonsai Nursery. Not sure if I should call it a Hobby, Obsession, or Passion but I am a koi keeper.  My current pond has been up for around 4years now.  I have kept Koi for around 17 years. Our Koi Pond The gang I  have also always been fascinated with Bonsai.  I feel like the link between the Japanese art of Bonsai and keeping koi are so closely related that many Koi keepers also have a natural tendency to be drawn to the art. Since we were down in the Fort Myers area for the week I decided to check out Wigert's Bonsai nursery and maybe scratch this itch I have for Bonsai. OOOoooohhhh ALOE!

So we both know better, but under estimated the power of this Florida sun.  Mind you we didn't get totally baked but came in the house realizing we had got some sun yesterday.  Note to self use more sunblock! Honey, where's the aloe!! Today was a day to venture out.  We started off at Amy's Over Easy.  I think I'm on a quest this week to find the best seafood omelet on Sanibel.  So far nothing beats the Hungry fisherman at Lighthouse café.  Then we are off to Barefoot Beach. The water was crystal clear and pretty calm when we arrived. This place is a Gopher tortoise sanctuary.  They were everywhere!  They even ask you to look under your car before you leave.  They are an endangered species and their burrows on average are 30 feet long.  Gopher Tortoises are also considered a turtle but not all turtles are tortoises.  That's your turtle trivia for the day.   Gopher Tortoise We parked at the last access and we...

The Sequel-Day 3

Happy 7/11/11. Hope your lucky today.  I know I am after all I'm here.  Have I told you lately how much I love this place?  Probably not I'm not the mushy type but I do!  Today the Director and The exec. producer got out for breakfast while the rest of the cast spent time at home base doing some pre-soaking in the pool before we logged in another day at the beach. My favorite breakfast on the Island has to be the Hungry Fisherman at the Lighthouse Cafe.  After breakfast a quick stop By Tropical wines but they were not open yet and the Director was getting itchy to get back to the beach.  I've been waiting over a year now to try their Watermelon wine and I'm gonna get some this year.  Just hope I don't have to break the window out of the place or pick the lock to do it.  JK! (seems like they're always closed when I stop by. In the Blink of an Eye

It's been a rough week this week.  While I generally keep my blog on the lighter side.  My words come from my head, but my desire to write comes from my heart.  My heart this week has felt both pain and Joy some of which I'll share with you today. On Monday Nov. 20th I'm on the mends from a rough couple of days on what looks like could be a precursory strike from a future Kidney Stone.  Spent a couple of days on pain meds, telling myself I'm not going to the ER.  Carol's been battling the crud and been coughing a lot for the past week.  We get a visit from Kristine, our daughter (technically Daughter-in law) but we adopted here years ago when she moved down here from Oregon to carve out a life with our son Ryan.  In her selfless manner, she's here to deliver a spare nebulizer to her Missouri mom, who's been fighting the crud.  Why? Because that's just who she is. She didn't visit for long, and we shared a few passing comments about her not wanting...

Dry Tortuga National Park

Life's Highway can lead us down many paths.  Concrete, blacktop, gravel, dirt roads and sometimes no road at all. That's the case for our adventure today.  We take a Two and one quarter-hour boat ride 70 miles west of Key West to Dry Tortuga National Park. I wouldn't consider myself a history buff, but this place had me in total awe.  We recently bought the Senior Lifetime National Park Pass and this is officially our first stop using the pass.  It did not disappoint.   There is no way the pictures I will post here can really reveal the true beauty of this area.  The blues and turquoise water were breathtaking and sitting in the middle of this natural beauty 70 miles off the coast from Key West sits Fort Jefferson on Garden Key.  Fort Jefferson is the largest brick and mortar building in the Americas.  Some 16 million bricks were used to build the fort.  The bricks came from Maine and Pensacola.  Can you imagine the challenge of getting ...
