Our trip provided us with lots of wildlife.  The water out our backdoor was so clear, it was easy to see the bottom.  We also saw fish and coral at Dry Tortuga National Park, but unfortunately it was too difficult for me to get good pictures with my iPhone in a waterproof case.

So I have been a little behind in posting to the blog this year.  The time is flying by way too fast.  Wednesday's plan was a day at the beach.  I started off by getting a few shots of the sunrise from the dock.  Nothing like watching the world wake up in paradise.  I was then off to Baileys for some Doughsants.  This was another first for us.  We never heard of a doughsant before but thought what the heck lets give them a try.  I kind of envisioned the light airy texture of a croissant mixed with the glazed goodness of a doughnut. The folks at Baileys are so polite.  The lady at the Bakery counter told me this batch came out smaller than normal so they gave me double the amount for the same price! The outside was like I expected but there was some sort of filling inside a little like a cream cheese but with some sort of flavoring that was not sweet.  Sorry not a big fan of the doughsant...

Beach Angel turns 10

So today is Lexi birthday!  For her birthday she was given the present of a perfect beach morning. Calmest water we've seen all week.  The sky was filled with sunshine and the ocean was full of  sailboats, paddle boaters, Parasails, pelicans, people and even a manatee.  It was just like when you have a bad round of golf somewhere during the round you hit a great shot and its enough to make you want to come back and do it again.  Today was that good shot! Around 1:00 the sky opened up and we made a hasty retreat to the house but it was ok because Lexi dinner of choice for her birthday was where else but Cheeburger Cheeburger.  This little 60# is going to tackle the monster burger.  She determined to get her picture on the wall.  I don't classify Lexi as a big eater but to all of our astonishment she polished that thing off.  She challenged Don to take on the one pounder and he didn't disappoint.  So early dinner and back to...

The Sequel-Day 3

Happy 7/11/11. Hope your lucky today.  I know I am after all I'm here.  Have I told you lately how much I love this place?  Probably not I'm not the mushy type but I do!  Today the Director and The exec. producer got out for breakfast while the rest of the cast spent time at home base doing some pre-soaking in the pool before we logged in another day at the beach. My favorite breakfast on the Island has to be the Hungry Fisherman at the Lighthouse Cafe.  After breakfast a quick stop By Tropical wines but they were not open yet and the Director was getting itchy to get back to the beach.  I've been waiting over a year now to try their Watermelon wine and I'm gonna get some this year.  Just hope I don't have to break the window out of the place or pick the lock to do it.  JK! (seems like they're always closed when I stop by. Exploration beyond the beach

So the theme this year is about new experiences and first for us while here on Captiva/Sanibel. Our house this year sits on the water up the channel from Blind Pass.  This is a first for us usually we are trying to get closer to the gulf but the island is narrow down by Blind Pass and it is a pretty short walk to the beach. The house is not much more than 30 foot off the water and has a dock which has led to many new discoveries for the Beach Angels.  I put together a Scavenger Hunt for the Angels this year.  They are getting older and I wanted to open their eyes to the wonderful world of nature that surrounds this island. The Scavenger hunt has about forty items.  They either need to collect or spot the items while here this week.  Lexi  and I spent quality time this evening sitting on the dock and watching nature in all its splendor.  From Rainbows, Osprey eating a fish and a alligator we got a little of everything tonight.  Best part was just s...

Welcome to Marathon

The adventure continues as we head further south, down to the keys.  Home base this week will be Marathon.  On Monday, we have a trip planned to Dry Tortuga National Park.  That is pretty much the only thing that has a time commitment to it.  We're just going to let the week play out and see what each day brings us. We drove through Fort Myers Beach on our way to an overnight stop in Bonita Springs.  I think due to the higher concentration of houses and businesses on FMB the devastation was extreme.  We stayed in a house on the south end FMB back in 2019.  Below is a picture of that house taken in March of this year.  Bottom floor blown out, and what you don't see in this picture is the whole back of the house is gone. Superman & Tweety Bird

Thursday morning it was time for more seafood omelet research.  We went to the Island Cow and I got a what?  answer: Seafood Omelet.  Just seeing if you've been paying attention.  The cow's omlete did have a pretty good amount of seafood but the crab meat was only shreds and there was more shrimp than anything.  There was also a watery consistency to the inside of the omelet that was most likely from not suffciently draining the seafood before adding it to the omlete. So ranking order so far IMO is: 1.  Hungry fisherman @  Lighthouse Cafe 2.  Crab & asparagus omelet @ Amy's Over Easy 3.  Loaded Seafood Omelet @ Island Cow On Thursday the high rollers came to Captiva.  I'm not referring to a group from vegas with money to burn, but mother nature rockin the waves in the gulf.  You know it's rough when you look down the beach as far as the eye can see and there is not more than a hand full of people in the water. OOOoooohhhh ALOE!

So we both know better, but under estimated the power of this Florida sun.  Mind you we didn't get totally baked but came in the house realizing we had got some sun yesterday.  Note to self use more sunblock! Honey, where's the aloe!! Today was a day to venture out.  We started off at Amy's Over Easy.  I think I'm on a quest this week to find the best seafood omelet on Sanibel.  So far nothing beats the Hungry fisherman at Lighthouse café.  Then we are off to Barefoot Beach. The water was crystal clear and pretty calm when we arrived. This place is a Gopher tortoise sanctuary.  They were everywhere!  They even ask you to look under your car before you leave.  They are an endangered species and their burrows on average are 30 feet long.  Gopher Tortoises are also considered a turtle but not all turtles are tortoises.  That's your turtle trivia for the day.   Gopher Tortoise We parked at the last access and we...

Manatees behind Green Flash Well we made it back home.  Reality is setting back in only a few short days till back to the daily grind.  I have posted several pictures from the week.  We get to have our annual  contest and decide which ones get blown up and framed to hang on the wall till next years visit.  It gives us something to look forward to while we are waiting.

Dry Tortuga National Park

Life's Highway can lead us down many paths.  Concrete, blacktop, gravel, dirt roads and sometimes no road at all. That's the case for our adventure today.  We take a Two and one quarter-hour boat ride 70 miles west of Key West to Dry Tortuga National Park. I wouldn't consider myself a history buff, but this place had me in total awe.  We recently bought the Senior Lifetime National Park Pass and this is officially our first stop using the pass.  It did not disappoint.   There is no way the pictures I will post here can really reveal the true beauty of this area.  The blues and turquoise water were breathtaking and sitting in the middle of this natural beauty 70 miles off the coast from Key West sits Fort Jefferson on Garden Key.  Fort Jefferson is the largest brick and mortar building in the Americas.  Some 16 million bricks were used to build the fort.  The bricks came from Maine and Pensacola.  Can you imagine the challenge of getting ...

Not So Welcome Mat

 So we're back! Time to blow some dust off this Blog and share another week of "paradise" A.K.A. Sanibel/Captiva Island. New experiences in store this year for starters we got a new "Beach Angel"  Skylar, she's our newest grandchild. She, her two sisters and Mom and Dad are with us this year.  At four months old she now takes the title of the youngest to share this special place. Today Skylar and I spent some quality time on the Lania (also known as the screened in porch for you folks back in the midwest).  As you can see Skylar thinks PaPa is a hoot! A long drive which started at 2:45 a.m. Friday Morning.  Our first leg of the trip was quiet because the Beach Angels rode with their Mom & Dad till we met up in Kentucky for some Smiley face pancakes in Paducah.  We started a routine years ago when the Beach Angels were little where NaNa would give them surprises along the way.
