Hey Mike,Mike,Mike Hump Days are not allowed on vacation!

So I have been a little behind in posting to the blog this year.  The time is flying by way too fast.  Wednesday's plan was a day at the beach.  I started off by getting a few shots of the sunrise from the dock.  Nothing like watching the world wake up in paradise.  I was then off to Baileys for some Doughsants.  This was another first for us.  We never heard of a doughsant before but thought what the heck lets give them a try.  I kind of envisioned the light airy texture of a croissant mixed with the glazed goodness of a doughnut.
The folks at Baileys are so polite.  The lady at the Bakery counter told me this batch came out smaller than normal so they gave me double the amount for the same price!

The outside was like I expected but there was some sort of filling inside a little like a cream cheese but with some sort of flavoring that was not sweet.  Sorry not a big fan of the doughsant

Doughsants from Baileys

We headed to the beach after breakfast the ocean was rolling in with a bit more force today so we turned our focus on honing our skills on our Beach Art.  The Beach Angels and I built a Captiva Crocky.  The oldest Beach Angel "Lexi"  named our crocky "Coconut".

 So we made a couple of new batches of wine to bring down with us on vacation this year.  I thought it would be for medicinal purpose of course,   We heard about a carpenter from the Fort Myers area that caught some rare form of flesh eating bacteria. Best they can figure he contracted it while walking in the gulf and apparently had a wound on his foot. Strictly as a precaution I told Rachelle that it is a known fact that alcohol kills bacteria and there's alcohol in wine so I figured if we consumed enough we would be OK or wouldn't care one way are another.

One of the Beach Angels "Taylor" found what I thought was a rather unique Shell this year.  It might be common but I have not seen one before.  I'm hoping one of my shelling experts can chime in and tell me what it is,  The Scavenger hunt has definitely made the Beach Angels pay closer attention to their surroundings this week. We didn't have any luck finding the drink umbrellas so they made a couple out of paper, toothpicks and chewing gum.  Great thinking girls!

What shell is this?

On Wednesday evening after dinner the Beach Angels and I took a walk back to the beach to check on "Coconut"(our beach art from earlier in the day) and while there we found a coconut that had washed ashore.  The angels thought it looked like a funny face.  We walked all the way down to Blind pass.  I left my phone at the house this time comfortably resting in a bag of rice.  Still trying to dry it out from my adventure on Tuesday.  I really enjoy looking for things on the beach and doing it with these two make it even better.


We also gave the girls journals on the way down this year so they could document their week.  Most of their entries have been about the Scavenger hunt but they also both wrote about their baby sister "Skylar" who decided to do a first of her own this week by rolling over.  Both of the Beach Angels thought it was important enough event to write about it in their journals.  Who know maybe someday they will be our next bloggers.

Awesome job of the Sand art...Coconut looks pretty scary!! :D Your photos are wonderful, and I just think the scavenger hunt idea is awesome....I will have to copy that when we finally get to take our grandson to Sanibel!....loving your posts....yeah the forum is dead these days, though I just noticed that they joined facebook, maybe trying to 'generate business'!!

BTW RC ....the shell is called an "Imperial Venus" shell....took me some time to find out what it is.....all my shell books are now down there in Florida, finally found it in the Sanibel/Captiva guide!!

A Special Shell

Yesterday evening we had one on the lowest tide we were able to catch this week.   I walked the surf at the shoreline to see if there were any shells. I was able to find a few but the shells have not been plentiful this week.  We actually collected more at Barefoot Beach the other day than we have here all week. As I was walking along I began remembering some of the times on the beach with the Beach Angels.  The younger one "Taylor" taught me a life's lesson that I would like to share with you. We're back home now and I thought I would make one last post to catch up and share some pictures from the week.  Have you ever noticed the older you get how time seems to fly by faster?  I can remember as a child summer vacations that seemed like  they went on forever.  Now a week is here and gone before you know it and a weekend goes by in the blink of an eye.  If I didn't know better I would swear the earth was turning faster.  One thing for sure when I was a kid it was a time when things were much simpler and took longer.  While technology is great, I think it will deprive some of our younger generation from some of the simpler joys in life.  Things like "kick the can" and staying out and playing all day just making sure you got home when the street lights came on. Merica Road Trippin Chapter 5 "America the Beautiful"

While spending our day in Glacier, the rain came in during the afternoon.  Not a lot but enough to muddy up the trails.  We had considered staying an extra day, but with the rain and the fact that there were some ongoing issues back home because of storms while we were gone. We thought we should push on towards our next stop.  We headed to Rapid City, SD.  Our target areas here would be Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and the Badlands. Mt. Rushmore Birth, Growth, Development, Preservation   There is a secret room carved into the mountain behind one of the president's heads. In the Blink of an Eye

It's been a rough week this week.  While I generally keep my blog on the lighter side.  My words come from my head, but my desire to write comes from my heart.  My heart this week has felt both pain and Joy some of which I'll share with you today. On Monday Nov. 20th I'm on the mends from a rough couple of days on what looks like could be a precursory strike from a future Kidney Stone.  Spent a couple of days on pain meds, telling myself I'm not going to the ER.  Carol's been battling the crud and been coughing a lot for the past week.  We get a visit from Kristine, our daughter (technically Daughter-in law) but we adopted here years ago when she moved down here from Oregon to carve out a life with our son Ryan.  In her selfless manner, she's here to deliver a spare nebulizer to her Missouri mom, who's been fighting the crud.  Why? Some of today's "BS"

 Today we started our day with some "BS".   B reakfast & S trawberry Preserves Our usual opening parlay into a week of eating out and consuming adult beverages. No better place to start than the Lighthouse Cafe. The crowds seem a little lighter this year.  Not sure why but I know people are dealing with a lot of "BS".  Hopefully my "BS" this week will make you smile. Waitress comes to the table "Hi you all ready to order."  Me: "You kidding I been waiting a year for this" I could go on and on about my breakfast choice but you've heard that before.  Today we'll focus on something else that the Lighthouse does really well.  They make their own strawberry preserves and serve it in a little container.  Take that hot buttered toast and dip it in there.  OMG it's pure heaven. The Sequel-Day4

Today we skipped the morning breakfast and the cast walked down the beach to Blind Pass.  We were hoping for a little help from the shell gods but all we really got was a few augers, olives and wet.  The gods decided to give us rain and the closer to the house we got the harder it rained.  Oh well it was warm and was keeping the mosquitoes at bay. Today The Roadie and the Executive Producer went to play golf.  The Dunes was closed for aeration of the greens so we settled on Beachview.  I couldn't find the balls I used last year Callaway "Bite"  I liked those because they really fit my game.(It bites too).  Well I settled on a new ball this year from Nike It Nike SFT after the first few holes I figured out what the SFT stands for.  heading STRAIGHT FOR TROUBLE!  Highlight after the golf excursion was to stop by Tropical wines and I FINALLY got my bottle of Watermelon Wine.  I been waiting for it for over a year.  Hope its worth the wait.  Tropical Wines is located in T

Exploration beyond the beach

So the theme this year is about new experiences and first for us while here on Captiva/Sanibel. Our house this year sits on the water up the channel from Blind Pass.  This is a first for us usually we are trying to get closer to the gulf but the island is narrow down by Blind Pass and it is a pretty short walk to the beach. The house is not much more than 30 foot off the water and has a dock which has led to many new discoveries for the Beach Angels.  I put together a Scavenger Hunt for the Angels this year.  They are getting older and I wanted to open their eyes to the wonderful world of nature that surrounds this island. The Scavenger hunt has about forty items.  They either need to collect or spot the items while here this week.  Lexi  and I spent quality time this evening sitting on the dock and watching nature in all its splendor.  From Rainbows, Osprey eating a fish and a alligator we got a little of everything tonight.  Best part was just sitting there sharing the time together.

Superman & Tweety Bird

Thursday morning it was time for more seafood omelet research.  We went to the Island Cow and I got a what?  answer: Seafood Omelet.  Just seeing if you've been paying attention.  The cow's omlete did have a pretty good amount of seafood but the crab meat was only shreds and there was more shrimp than anything.  There was also a watery consistency to the inside of the omelet that was most likely from not suffciently draining the seafood before adding it to the omlete. So ranking order so far IMO is: 1.  Hungry fisherman @  Lighthouse Cafe 2.  Crab & asparagus omelet @ Amy's Over Easy 3.  Loaded Seafood Omelet @ Island Cow On Thursday the high rollers came to Captiva.  I'm not referring to a group from vegas with money to burn, but mother nature rockin the waves in the gulf.  You know it's rough when you look down the beach as far as the eye can see and there is not more than a hand full of people in the water. Boogie Board Beach Angels

So Sunday started off with overcast skies, a quick thank-you to the man upstairs for giving us such a beautiful place to be, and breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe.  Best seafood omelette on Sanibel hands down. When we got back we were in "Beach Mode".  Not Marshawn Lynch "Beast Mode" but Carol lets getting moving, time to go to the Beach Mode.  Since the skies were still overcast we weren't  in full Beach Mode which means we didn't take all the usual stuff.  For those of you that have been with us you know how much of the usual stuff we take! I would have to rate this as one of the best Beach Days for the Beach Angels that I can remember.  Our spot on the beach has a nice sandbar running  just out from the shore line and it made for Boogie Board heaven for the girls today. Some Beach

Posting a little later today sitting out on the lania listening to the thunder roll and having a glass of Liquid Lubrication. Strawberry/Plum wine 2008.  (It was a very good year).   As you regulars on the forum know I enjoy making homemade wine.  This one was actually made by a friend of mine.  His name is Gil.  He's the one that introduced me to the art of winemaking.  Strawberry Plum 2008   Gil is best described as one of those country boys that can survive. He's does it all from making his own deer sausage to turning various fruits into liquid lubrication he makes some good stuff!  The first time I saw him making deer sausage I was a bit perplexed he was using the camper on the back of his old Ford pickup as a smoker.  I thought the darn truck was on fire when I first saw it.  Some of the best deer sausage I ever ate. Before I get to todays agenda I should back up a bit to dinner last night.  The wife and I headed out to Thistle Lodge.  It has become a regular dinn
