Shin-Zen-Bi

The Bonsai represents the three virtues or Shin-Zen-Bi, which translate into truth, goodness and beauty.

Saturday was our last day on the island.  We ventured out on another field trip.  This time to North Fort Myers area to check out Wigert's Bonsai Nursery.

Not sure if I should call it a Hobby, Obsession, or Passion but I am a koi keeper.  My current pond has been up for around 4years now.  I have kept Koi for around 17 years.

I  have also always been fascinated with Bonsai.  I feel like the link between the Japanese art of Bonsai and keeping koi are so closely related that many Koi keepers also have a natural tendency to be drawn to the art.

Since we were down in the Fort Myers area for the week I decided to check out Wigert's Bonsai nursery and maybe scratch this itch I have for Bonsai.

This place didn't disappoint

This was a very eye opening experience and to be fully appreciated taking a camera along is a must.  As many of us Koi Keepers have learned along the way there's so much more to keeping Koi than putting some fish in a tank and adding water.  I would say the same is true for Bonsai as well.  Its not just about placing a plant in a pot and watching it grow.  It truly is an art form and you are the artist.

Wigert's also has a koi pond and they sell fish at the nursery as well.  This blog however will be focused on the art of Bonsai.

Since I know next to nothing about keeping Bonsai I was Hungry for information. Ashley and John are two employees at Wigert's right away I noticed the passion for the art of Bonsai from these two.  You don't often get to work in a job where you have a true passion for what you are doing.  These two are all in.  They not only take care of the Bonsai at Wigert's but they also have personal plants at home where they continue to practice the art of Bonsai.  When they talk to you about a plant you can see they are already formulating a vision for the plant.  In the world of Bonsai as the artist you are creating the end result and only limited by your own creativity.

Bonsai is an art of illusion.  You create an illusion of age, weight and mass.  You are basically simulating the appearance of a fully mature tree but in a miniature form.  The folks a Wigert's are masterful at creating this simulation.  They have over 150 Bonsai trees in their private collection and stock available already potted in Bonsai pots or Pre-Bonsai stock for creating your own work of art.

We spent well over 2 hours in total amazement of what Wigerts has created here.  The beauty of the operation and the abundance and willingness to share knowledge of Bonsai was very enjoyable.

Should you get the chance and you are in the Fort Myers area I encourage you to experience it for yourself.

I did scratch the itch. I now have two projects to start with.  I'm sure I will make some mistakes along the way.  I know when it comes to keeping Koi I have made a few but without Risk there can be No Reward!

So  the Bonsai price point is alot like collecting Koi.  You can spend less dollars kind of like buying Tosai and see what comes of it or you can buy a collectible specimen that is the equivalent of high end show koi from Japan.  It seems like the Do it yourselfer in me always drives me towards the Tosai.

I have always loved Bonsai....we lived in Japan 1970-72 and I remember seeing them everywhere! I'm sure its super expensive to find one here...I might have to check this place out on our next trip!!!

Yesterday evening we had one on the lowest tide we were able to catch this week.   I walked the surf at the shoreline to see if there were any shells. I was able to find a few but the shells have not been plentiful this week.  We actually collected more at Barefoot Beach the other day than we have here all week. We're back home now and I thought I would make one last post to catch up and share some pictures from the week.  Have you ever noticed the older you get how time seems to fly by faster?  I can remember as a child summer vacations that seemed like  they went on forever.  Now a week is here and gone before you know it and a weekend goes by in the blink of an eye.  If I didn't know better I would swear the earth was turning faster.  One thing for sure when I was a kid it was a time when things were much simpler and took longer.  While technology is great, I think it will deprive some of our younger generation from some of the simpler joys in life.  Things like "kick the can" and staying out and playing all day just making sure you got home when the street lights came on. Merica Road Trippin Chapter 5 "America the Beautiful"

While spending our day in Glacier, the rain came in during the afternoon.  Not a lot but enough to muddy up the trails.  We had considered staying an extra day, but with the rain and the fact that there were some ongoing issues back home because of storms while we were gone. We thought we should push on towards our next stop.  We headed to Rapid City, SD.  Our target areas here would be Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and the Badlands. Mt. Rushmore Birth, Growth, Development, Preservation   There is a secret room carved into the mountain behind one of the president's heads. In the Blink of an Eye

It's been a rough week this week.  While I generally keep my blog on the lighter side.  My words come from my head, but my desire to write comes from my heart.  My heart this week has felt both pain and Joy some of which I'll share with you today. On Monday Nov. 20th I'm on the mends from a rough couple of days on what looks like could be a precursory strike from a future Kidney Stone.  Spent a couple of days on pain meds, telling myself I'm not going to the ER.  Carol's been battling the crud and been coughing a lot for the past week.  We get a visit from Kristine, our daughter (technically Daughter-in law) but we adopted here years ago when she moved down here from Oregon to carve out a life with our son Ryan.  In her selfless manner, she's here to deliver a spare nebulizer to her Missouri mom, who's been fighting the crud.  Why? Some of today's "BS"

 Today we started our day with some "BS".   B reakfast & S trawberry Preserves Our usual opening parlay into a week of eating out and consuming adult beverages. No better place to start than the Lighthouse Cafe. The crowds seem a little lighter this year.  Not sure why but I know people are dealing with a lot of "BS".  Hopefully my "BS" this week will make you smile. Waitress comes to the table "Hi you all ready to order."  Me: "You kidding I been waiting a year for this" I could go on and on about my breakfast choice but you've heard that before.  Today we'll focus on something else that the Lighthouse does really well.  They make their own strawberry preserves and serve it in a little container.  Take that hot buttered toast and dip it in there.  OMG it's pure heaven. Merica Road Trippin! Chapter 2 "On The Road Again"

 I'm a little delayed in releasing the second chapter for the Road Trippin blog.  Remember that storm I told you about that happened on July 1st when we left on our trip?  Well, apparently mother nature thought since we wern't here to enjoy her fury, she would pay us another visit on the 12th.  More trees down and power knocked out again!   So I have been spending some time doing cleanup and getting the tree off my shed!  This storm took out some huge older growth trees.  Ripped them out right at the base of the tree.  Good thing is we are all safe.  The cleanup is not done but thought I would come in and cool off.  I'm missing those cooler temperatures we were experiencing in Montana and South Dakota. Mother nature is not happy! Base of the tree that hit the shed!    Thankfully, this old oak was leaning on about a 30-degree angle away from the shed.  The limbs that did make contact on the shed only did minimal damage.  The tree would have done some serious damage had it be

The Sequel-Day4

Today we skipped the morning breakfast and the cast walked down the beach to Blind Pass.  We were hoping for a little help from the shell gods but all we really got was a few augers, olives and wet.  The gods decided to give us rain and the closer to the house we got the harder it rained.  Oh well it was warm and was keeping the mosquitoes at bay. Today The Roadie and the Executive Producer went to play golf.  The Dunes was closed for aeration of the greens so we settled on Beachview.  I couldn't find the balls I used last year Callaway "Bite"  I liked those because they really fit my game.(It bites too).  Well I settled on a new ball this year from Nike It Nike SFT after the first few holes I figured out what the SFT stands for.  heading STRAIGHT FOR TROUBLE!  Highlight after the golf excursion was to stop by Tropical wines and I FINALLY got my bottle of Watermelon Wine.  I been waiting for it for over a year.  Hope its worth the wait.  Tropical Wines is located in T

Superman & Tweety Bird

Thursday morning it was time for more seafood omelet research.  We went to the Island Cow and I got a what?  answer: Seafood Omelet.  Just seeing if you've been paying attention.  The cow's omlete did have a pretty good amount of seafood but the crab meat was only shreds and there was more shrimp than anything.  There was also a watery consistency to the inside of the omelet that was most likely from not suffciently draining the seafood before adding it to the omlete. So ranking order so far IMO is: 1.  Hungry fisherman @  Lighthouse Cafe 2.  Crab & asparagus omelet @ Amy's Over Easy 3.  Loaded Seafood Omelet @ Island Cow On Thursday the high rollers came to Captiva.  I'm not referring to a group from vegas with money to burn, but mother nature rockin the waves in the gulf.  You know it's rough when you look down the beach as far as the eye can see and there is not more than a hand full of people in the water. Boogie Board Beach Angels

So Sunday started off with overcast skies, a quick thank-you to the man upstairs for giving us such a beautiful place to be, and breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe.  Best seafood omelette on Sanibel hands down. When we got back we were in "Beach Mode".  Not Marshawn Lynch "Beast Mode" but Carol lets getting moving, time to go to the Beach Mode.  Since the skies were still overcast we weren't  in full Beach Mode which means we didn't take all the usual stuff.  For those of you that have been with us you know how much of the usual stuff we take! I would have to rate this as one of the best Beach Days for the Beach Angels that I can remember.  Our spot on the beach has a nice sandbar running  just out from the shore line and it made for Boogie Board heaven for the girls today. Branson by the Ocean a.k.a. Gulf Shores Alabama

So today reality sets in and its back to the daily grind.  I still haven't told you about our last day at Gulf Shores, Alabama so here goes. We left St. George Island around 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.  Next stop, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores Alabama. We drove along the coast most of the way.  Lots of swamp logging going on in this area and somewhat unfortunate to see so many closed businesses and abandoned buildings scattered along the coast line. It was a different story when we got into Orange Beach/Gulf Shores.  I compare it to a place we have in the southern part of Missouri called Branson.  Lots of people, lots of cars, and a bunch of tourist type attractions.  So to me Gulf Shores was Branson by the Ocean. It has a higher density of people and high rise accommodations than my heart desires but we have never been here and now we know.      The slogan for Gulf shores is "Small Town, Big Beach"  The beach was wide and where we stopped there was probably 3-
