Sanibel/Captiva "The sequel"

Hi All
Its that time once again for another adventure to our favorite place, Sanibel/Captiva.  We're actually overdue but we decided this year to rent a home on Captiva from an owner instead of going through AMRC.  Home base this year will still be on Captiva but we will be closer to Sanibel on Captiva Drive versus our usual hangouts on Lakia Lane.

I had such a good time sharing our adventures last year with you that I decided to do it again.
I think we'll title this trip report "The Sequel"  We'll be there on Saturday.  Stay tuned

Here's Your Sign

 So today, my family and I got some terrible news, a close friend of ours passed away overnight.  Our family is of course devastated by this.   My blog has generally been about trips and experiences down life's highway.  Mostly about the good times and trips we have spent with family.  Occasionally I'll share a few life lessons I've learned along the way.   I'm typically not an outspoken person, but the blog allows me to convey what comes from my heart, and my heart is compelled to share this one with you. 30 Day Beach Bum (The Ocean is like a box of Chocolates)

The 30-day Beach Bum tour has come to an end.  Back home to reality and Day 1 had me wishing I was back at the Beach.  Why is it when you're gone from home for an extended period of time, the home has a way of reminding you that you can run, but you can't hide from the maintenance requirements of being a homeowner. The well tank decided to give me such a reminder while we were gone. The pressure relief valve decided to pop off and partially flood the basement.  Fortunately, water was contained to the unfinished side of the basement. I spent half the day yesterday troubleshooting and making repairs. A faulty pressure switch was the culprit causing the system to over pressurize, I shouldn't complain it was the original switch from when we built the house but of course it waited to fail while we were gone. Thanks to Ryan, the grass did get cut once while we were away for a month, but today I'm sure I pissed off all the local frogs. I sent them running for their life while ...

30 Day Beach Bum (Momma don't take my kodachrome Away!)

The second wave of Special guest is coming towards the end.  We have been blessed with sunny days.  The rain has held off till late evenings all week so Adalynn, Riley, and Lucas have managed to get alot done on their Scavenger hunt.  We've also logged some more Beach time.   We did go back to the deeded beach access once.  Its a great spot very few people on the beach there, but the the path to the beach is a challenge. So we have spent more days down at the Fulgar Street Beach access. The unloading zone is more open and less tempting for the blood sucking welcoming committee. For those of you who know our daughter-in-law (Kristine), she was in a car accident back in 2023.  Today she is still battling issues with walking but true to the trooper she is she didn't let that stop her from experiencing the Gulf for the first time.  All we needed was a trolling motor    Mission Success-Now how we gonna get her outta there? Mission: Florida Georgia Line Codename: Zero Dark Thirty

Waking up before alarm goes off at zero dark thirty a.k.a. 2:00 a. m.: check Hot shower and a shave:  check Cooler iced and ready for action: check Last minute items loaded in truck: check iPod loaded with tunes and podcast for the trip:  check Tall Tall cup of coffee which I will regret later:  check Carry the sleeping beach angels to the truck try not to wake them or they'll turn into devils:  check,check Say goodbye to the dogs, cats and other family members not fortunate enough to deploy on this mission: check, check, check Load the wife in the truck:  no need to check she wouldn't miss it for the world even if it meant sleeping overnight in the truck! So we deploy this mission on time  actually 1 hour earlier than we would mormally leave.  Everything  is going great until! Don't choke the Chicken in Key West

 After our adventure out to Dry Tortuga National Park, we decided to have dinner in Key West before heading back to Marathon.  A few things we noticed about Key West:  Parking is at a premium You don't need an alarm clock in Key West There's a turf war going on in Key West Don't choke the chicken in Key West Duvall is party central Mahi Tacos at Flying Monkeys Saloon are off the chain We parked in the city garage off Grinnell street when we arrived at the ferry dock for our trip.  It was a little after 6:00 a.m.  In Key West, you don't need to bring an alarm clock.  They provide one free of charge in the form of a two legged feathered dynamo who is sure to let you know when the sun is coming up.  There were roosters and chickens everywhere, and the roosters were announcing the coming of the new day.  No hitting the snooze button here!  Foghorn Leghorn Says “As senior rooster ’round here, it’s my duty, and my pleasure, to instruct junior roost...

Soccer PaPa

At the end of February, my life has changed.  No more 9 to 5 for me, every day is a vacation as retirement has officially kicked in!  My blog has been mainly devoted to our experiences on some small islands in southwest Florida, Sanibel and Captiva Island. While I hope to still visit and share more experiences from this magical place, I will be sharing other trips and experiences as we continue to navigate along Life's Highway.   Before, it seemed like I only wrote about the annual trip to that special place. My intentions were to share a bit of humor and to memorialize some of our precious memories and life's lessons we learned along the way.   Most recently, I have become a Soccer PaPa.  No, I don't drive a minivan, I'm not overly vocal when sitting in the stands, and I'm not jumping up to dispute the referees calls (although I have questioned the lack of a call from time to time).  My gosh, since when has soccer become wrestling at the Chase? ...

Flip Flops or Thongs

So Friday after some shopping we stopped at the Beach Angels favorite restaurant on Sanibel,Cheeburger, Cheeburger.  I don't know why it is but every time I leave that place I feel like I just shot an episode of Man vs. Food and no my picture is not on the wall nor do I ever intend to get it put there. MY fries were loaded and my belly was bloated So were back to Captiva and time for the beach.  Turns out Superman and Tweety bird were there also.  They did try the boogie board out again today but only for a short time.  I think the workout the day before had them going at a slower pace today. Superman would hold onto Tweety Bird's ankles (now close your eyes and visualize this)  when the wave was just right he would push her off and she was riding the wave like a pro.  We ended up meeting them and spent hours on the beach just chatting about Captiva and beaches.  They were a really nice couple vacationing here from Mobile Alabama....

Hump Days are "BS"

With all the "BS" going on this week, things really got away from me.  So I'm going to have to lump some things together this year.  I know for most of you, Hump Day is a good thing, but when you're on vacation it's pretty much "BS".  It signifies that point in the week when vacation is on the downhill slide.  It has been a good week, and the fact that it will be over soon is of course total "BS".   B each  S nacks On Wednesday, we ran into an old acquaintance on the beach.  He's a shady character, has a long list of priors, and I believe he's even a jail bird.  This dude can make off with personal items and snacks quicker than you can say  "Nacho Cheese Doritos".  He stalk s you from afar and when the timing is right swoops in to commit his crime.  If you are ever down here, be on the lookout! Picture Download from the trip to the keys

Our trip provided us with lots of wildlife.  The water out our backdoor was so clear, it was easy to see the bottom.  We also saw fish and coral at Dry Tortuga National Park, but unfortunately it was too difficult for me to get good pictures with my iPhone in a waterproof case.
