Let Freedom Ring

Well as you can guess by the title of the post it is 4th of July.  Now close your eyes and concentrate real hard.  Can you hear it?  The sound of the surf.  I'm posting today from the beach.  Looks like today will be the best beach day so far.

Carol and I started the day off at Amy's Over Easy for some breakfast.  The crowds were already gathering for the annual 4th of July parade.  Carol says "B is before P" so beach it is.  We
finished breakfast about five minutes before the parade was about to begin. We headed back to Captiva.  Besides if all the people are at the parade the beach will be all to ourselves right?  WRONG!  The beach was packed I have never been here and seen so many people.  Doesn't matter though its still a beautiful day.

Today we even got to set up the beach canopy so I knew we would be in for a longer visit.  Its funny watching all the people come to the beach.  You have the minimalist you know you've seen her the women that comes down with one bottle of frozen water and a book.  Then you have my group.  Let's see just how much stuff we can pile on that beach cart and then find a pack mule to haul it down there.  Guess who gets to be the pack mule?

The oldest Beach Angel, Lexi is really starting to manage the water much better.  Still some pretty good waves today but a little salt water in the face is no big deal to her anymore like it use to be.  Wish I could say the same for the littlest Beach Angel, Taylor (she's 6) she can still be a little drama queen from time to time.  I'm sure she too will some day follow in her sisters footsteps.  It seems like just yesterday we started bringing them down here.  Where does the time go?

So as Carol and I were heading to breakfast this morning we were talking about all the signs where people name their property down here.  Carol ask if we owned a home down here what would we call it?  I couldn't think of anything right away but as I think about it I might go for "Beach Angel" or maybe something like "Seas the Moment".  How about you?  You've hit it big and you now own a property down here.  What would you call it?  If you are already fortunate enough to own property and you have named it.  What is it?

Our plans for tonight were to maybe grab a pizza on Sanibel and then catch some fireworks.  Thought we would go to lighthouse beach but Scott on the forum advised that it wouldn't be a very good viewing spot.  Not sure we want to fight the traffic and crowds on the causeway so we'll have to see what happens.

I'm sure there won't be much traffic on the forum or my blog today because everyone will be busy with your own families and 4th of July festivities.  Whatever those festivities might be have a safe and enjoyable holiday.  I know we will.

Isn't it great we live in a country where we can go to the beach if we want to?  Don't have to get permission for what we can or can't do?  Let Freedom ring!  Happy 4th.

Sounds like you're still having a great time. Over Easy is always good. Hopefully the crowds will disperse after today. It's crowded at the lake today for us.

Our lake house is named "Snug Harbor." I vote for "Beach Angel" when you hit your windfall!

Finding your "Happy Place"

Soccer PaPa

At the end of February, my life has changed.  No more 9 to 5 for me, every day is a vacation as retirement has officially kicked in!  My blog has been mainly devoted to our experiences on some small islands in southwest Florida, Sanibel and Captiva Island. While I hope to still visit and share more experiences from this magical place, I will be sharing other trips and experiences as we continue to navigate along Life's Highway.   Before, it seemed like I only wrote about the annual trip to that special place. My intentions were to share a bit of humor and to memorialize some of our precious memories and life's lessons we learned along the way.   Most recently, I have become a Soccer PaPa.  No, I don't drive a minivan, I'm not overly vocal when sitting in the stands, and I'm not jumping up to dispute the referees calls (although I have questioned the lack of a call from time to time).  My gosh, since when has soccer become wrestling at the Chase?    Two of our six gr

Exploration beyond the beach

So the theme this year is about new experiences and first for us while here on Captiva/Sanibel. Our house this year sits on the water up the channel from Blind Pass.  This is a first for us usually we are trying to get closer to the gulf but the island is narrow down by Blind Pass and it is a pretty short walk to the beach. The house is not much more than 30 foot off the water and has a dock which has led to many new discoveries for the Beach Angels.  I put together a Scavenger Hunt for the Angels this year.  They are getting older and I wanted to open their eyes to the wonderful world of nature that surrounds this island. The Scavenger hunt has about forty items.  They either need to collect or spot the items while here this week.  Lexi  and I spent quality time this evening sitting on the dock and watching nature in all its splendor.  From Rainbows, Osprey eating a fish and a alligator we got a little of everything tonight.  Best part was just sitting there sharing the time together.

So I have been a little behind in posting to the blog this year.  The time is flying by way too fast.  Wednesday's plan was a day at the beach.  I started off by getting a few shots of the sunrise from the dock.  Nothing like watching the world wake up in paradise.  I was then off to Baileys for some Doughsants.  This was another first for us.  We never heard of a doughsant before but thought what the heck lets give them a try.  I kind of envisioned the light airy texture of a croissant mixed with the glazed goodness of a doughnut. The folks at Baileys are so polite.  The lady at the Bakery counter told me this batch came out smaller than normal so they gave me double the amount for the same price! Welcome to Marathon

The adventure continues as we head further south, down to the keys.  Home base this week will be Marathon.  On Monday, we have a trip planned to Dry Tortuga National Park.  That is pretty much the only thing that has a time commitment to it.  We're just going to let the week play out and see what each day brings us. We drove through Fort Myers Beach on our way to an overnight stop in Bonita Springs.  I think due to the higher concentration of houses and businesses on FMB the devastation was extreme.  We stayed in a house on the south end FMB back in 2019.  Below is a picture of that house taken in March of this year.  Bottom floor blown out, and what you don't see in this picture is the whole back of the house is gone. Beach Angel turns 10

So today is Lexi birthday!  For her birthday she was given the present of a perfect beach morning. Calmest water we've seen all week.  The sky was filled with sunshine and the ocean was full of  sailboats, paddle boaters, Parasails, pelicans, people and even a manatee.  It was just like when you have a bad round of golf somewhere during the round you hit a great shot and its enough to make you want to come back and do it again.  Today was that good shot! Around 1:00 the sky opened up and we made a hasty retreat to the house but it was ok because Lexi dinner of choice for her birthday was where else but Cheeburger Cheeburger.  This little 60# is going to tackle the monster burger.  She determined to get her picture on the wall.  I don't classify Lexi as a big eater but to all of our astonishment she polished that thing off.  She challenged Don to take on the one pounder and he didn't disappoint.  So early dinner and back to the house to begin packing things up. We're back home now and I thought I would make one last post to catch up and share some pictures from the week.  Have you ever noticed the older you get how time seems to fly by faster?  I can remember as a child summer vacations that seemed like  they went on forever.  Now a week is here and gone before you know it and a weekend goes by in the blink of an eye.  If I didn't know better I would swear the earth was turning faster.  One thing for sure when I was a kid it was a time when things were much simpler and took longer.  While technology is great, I think it will deprive some of our younger generation from some of the simpler joys in life.  Things like "kick the can" and staying out and playing all day just making sure you got home when the street lights came on. Boogie Board Beach Angels

So Sunday started off with overcast skies, a quick thank-you to the man upstairs for giving us such a beautiful place to be, and breakfast at the Lighthouse Cafe.  Best seafood omelette on Sanibel hands down. When we got back we were in "Beach Mode".  Not Marshawn Lynch "Beast Mode" but Carol lets getting moving, time to go to the Beach Mode.  Since the skies were still overcast we weren't  in full Beach Mode which means we didn't take all the usual stuff.  For those of you that have been with us you know how much of the usual stuff we take! I would have to rate this as one of the best Beach Days for the Beach Angels that I can remember.  Our spot on the beach has a nice sandbar running  just out from the shore line and it made for Boogie Board heaven for the girls today. Ticket to paradise

$6 for a ticket to paradise.  I'll take it. Sanibel Causeway Price for admission $6 We're here!  Great trip down we actually arrived earlier than we normally would and we even made a stop in Sarasota to pick up a new water camera.  On day one we stopped in Valdosta Ga.  We got a text from our daughter she was surprised we made it there as quickly as we did then she politely ask us to let her out of the trunk!  I know she really wanted to come but a new job this year meant no trip for her and the Beach Angels.  I'm sure we will torture her all week long with text and pictures. We'll  put this new camera through the paces this week and hope that it holds up better than the Fujifilm one  did. It bit the dust while we were vacationing down here a couple years ago.  I really wanted to get a Panasonic Lumix T5 but it was impossible to find it without ordering it on-line and we waited too long and didn't think we could get it delivered in the mail before we left.

Manatee Alert!!!!!

On Tuesday we got out to the beach early.  The water was calm and clear.  So we hit the water right away and I brought the mask and snorkel with me to have a look around.  I could see the bottom in 4 to 5 foot of water.  I love to use the snorkel and float around its like your in your own little world.  It's just you and the ocean. You do have to occasionally look up to see where you are.  When I looked up on one occasion I saw two women standing on the shore looking out towards me.  The wife was in the water closer to shore and seemed to be having a conversation with them. I didn't really give it much thought at the time.  It seems like most people you meet down her are all super nice and I figured they were just saying "Hi" and talking about how calm the water was. So then they walked away and I drifted up to my wife.  She was laughing and saying something about Manatee alert!! Apparently the two ladies were on their porch when they spotted what they thought
