St George Island "The Uncommon Florida"

On Thursday morning our plan was to spend a few hours at the State Park on St. George Island.  The park was on the east end of the island.  The terrain and vegetation is much different here compared to our island paradise of Sanibel/Captiva.

We had high hopes of finding some different shells.  We briefly scouted the area out on Wednesday afternoon and saw many different color variations of bivalves that we are not use to seeing on Captiva.  We also found several shark eyes on Wednesday but many were too broken up to keep.

The park opens at 8:00 a.m. The cost to enter the park is $6.  There is about an 8 mile stretch of beach with several access and parking areas along the way.  There are two large parking areas with shelters and restroom along the beach in the park and several smaller parking with access to beach along the 8 mile stretch of the park.  The restroom and shelter areas were well maintained.  There are a lot of dunes in the park so the landscape is very different from Sanibel.

The shelling on Thursday was disappointing and the surf was a little rough so we mainly spent our time there walking the beach.  There was an abundance of crabs and wildlife on the beach.  It is very secluded and we had a large section of beach to our self.

Crossing over the Apalachicola bay on Thursday morning we saw the Oyster fisherman hard at work out in the bay harvesting oysters.

The east end  of the island is where the state park is located.  It was my favorite spot on this island.  The park beaches were virtually empty.  So it's perfect for some one on one time with nature. You won't find any chain store operations on this island.  It is low density zoning so there are no high rises.  The lack of vegetation put all the house out there in plain sight.  Some of the properties are maintained better than others.  The State Park was my favorite part of this island.  It's hard to beat the paradise that Sanibel and Captiva provides.

Homes on St George Island

While I was hoping to see more posters on The Sanibel Captiva message board during our trip report.  I was happy to get responses from those that bothered to post.

There are still about 13 coupons left in the Kiwanis Diner's Delight coupon book.  I also got an email saying that they sold out on the coupon books early this year and raised over $50K for scholarships for Sanibel/Captiva students.

I continue to pay it forward as "Shelllady" a.k.a. "O2Binsanibel" did to me several years back.  This year the lucky winner of the
leftover Diner's Delight coupon book is:

Wooohooo! Yay for Busybee2!! That's awesome!!

It looks like you are enjoying your trip home, but continue to verify that Sanibel/Captiva is still the best!! If only we could keep it a secret and all to ourselves!! :) Thanks for the post!! Where next?

I'm so excited! Thank you and it will be put to good use in august.

I will pm you tomorrow with my info.

Great trip report as usual. Personally I enjoy reading it off the blog more than the message board because it's much easier to see the pictures on the blog. Safe travels home.
